God Controls Everything

The Qur’an presents God as the sole sovereign over creation—nothing occurs without His permission, will, or knowledge. God controls life and death, provision and deprivation, guidance and misguidance, harm and benefit, and the ultimate outcome of every affair. This control is not mechanical or distant, but wise, purposeful, and just. Recognizing God’s control is central to understanding destiny (qadar), reliance (tawakkul), and ultimate accountability.

How the Qur’an Describes God’s Control

(57:22)

“Anything that happens on earth, or to you, has already been recorded, even before the creation. This is easy for God to do.”

Events are not random; they follow divine decree.

(76:30)

“Whatever you will is in accordance with God’s will. God is Omniscient, Most Wise.”

Human choices operate within God’s overarching will.

(81:29)

“Whatever you will is in accordance with God, Lord of the universe.”

Human intention does not override divine sovereignty.

(64:11)

“No disaster strikes except by God’s leave. Whoever believes in God, He guides his heart.”

Even hardship falls within God’s purposeful control.

(3:26)

“You grant sovereignty to whomever You will, and You strip sovereignty from whomever You will. You exalt whomever You will, and You humiliate whomever You will. In Your hand is all goodness. You are Omnipotent.”

Political and worldly power shift according to divine decree.

Control Over Life, Death, and Provision

(3:145)

“No one dies except by God’s leave, at a predetermined time.”

Death is not accidental or random.

(29:62)

“God is the One who controls the provision for whomever He wills; some He gives more, some less.”

Sustenance is not merely economic—it is divine provisioning.

(10:31)

“Who provides for you from the sky and from the earth? Who controls hearing and vision? Who brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living, and who controls all affairs? They will say, ‘God.’”

Even opponents recognized God’s ultimate control.

Control and Human Responsibility

The Qur’an recognizes both divine control and human accountability:

  • Humans choose, intend, and act:
(53:39) “Every human being is responsible for his own work.”

  • God judges and recompenses:
(45:22) “That every soul may be recompensed for what it earned.”

Thus, divine control does not eliminate human responsibility. Instead:

  • Humans operate within God’s control

  • God’s decree sets the bounds of possibility

  • Human effort determines one’s moral standing

This balance avoids fatalism and arrogance alike.

Implications for Worship and Conduct

  • Reliance upon God (Tawakkul)
Since control rests with God, reliance belongs to Him alone. (3:159)

  • No fear of intermediaries
No saint, sorcerer, idol, or institution controls destiny. (6:17)

  • No superstition
Luck, omens, and charms have no power in the Qur’anic worldview.

  • Patience in adversity
Setbacks are not divine neglect—they have purpose. (64:11)

  • Humility in success
Achievements are opportunities for gratitude, not self-worship. (16:53)

  • Trust in God over the powerful
Because power itself is allocated and removed by God. (3:26)

Rejecting False Notions (Qur’an-Only)

Recognizing God’s control rejects ideas such as:

  • Fate being controlled by planets, stars, or omens

  • Saints or prophets altering destiny on behalf of others

  • Sorcery or evil eye overriding God’s will

  • Luck determining outcomes

  • Death occurring by chance

  • Sustenance being purely human achievement

  • History being outside God’s plan

The Qur’an repeatedly dismantles these beliefs.

(6:17)

“If God touches you with hardship, none can relieve it except He. And if He blesses you, none can withhold His blessing. He is Omnipotent.”

Control belongs to God alone.
