Why Does the Quran Give Mary Such Extraordinary Attention?

Among all the women mentioned in the Bible and throughout history, only one woman is mentioned by name in the Quran:

Mary (Maryam)

The Quran devotes remarkable attention to her life, her devotion to God, the miraculous birth of Jesus, and her role in God’s plan. An entire chapter of the Quran (Surah Maryam) bears her name, making her unique among all women mentioned in the Quran.

Yet many readers are surprised to discover that the Quran’s emphasis is not simply on the virgin birth of Jesus. Instead, it presents Mary as an example of faith, devotion, purity, trust in God, and complete submission to His will.

This page brings together Quran-based studies exploring Mary’s life, her family, her relationship with Jesus, and the lessons the Quran draws from her remarkable example.

Why Is Mary Unique in the Quran?

The Quran gives Mary an extraordinary position.

Among the observations made directly from the Quran are:

  • The only woman mentioned by name.
  • An entire chapter (Surah Maryam) bears her name.
  • Her family receives special attention.
  • Her birth is described.
  • Her upbringing is described.
  • Her devotion to God is emphasized.
  • Angels speak directly to her.
  • The virgin birth of Jesus is described in detail.
  • She is presented as an example for all believers (66:12).

No other woman receives this level of attention in the Quran.

Mary's Family

The Quran begins Mary’s story even before her birth.

It describes the prayer of her mother, her dedication to God’s service, the family of Imran, and the guardianship of Zachariah.

The Virgin Birth

The miraculous birth of Jesus occupies an important place in the Quran.

The Quran presents the virgin birth as one of God’s signs and repeatedly reminds readers that God’s creative power is not limited by natural processes.

Rather than focusing on theological debates, the Quran directs attention to God’s ability to create by His command.

Did Mary Ever Marry?

An interesting observation from the Quran is that although it provides considerable detail about Mary’s life, the Quran never explicitly mentions a marriage.

It records:

  • her birth,
  • her childhood,
  • her upbringing,
  • the annunciation,
  • her pregnancy,
  • the birth of Jesus,
  • and her return to her people.

Yet no marriage is mentioned.

Whether this omission is significant is left to the reader. The Quran itself neither confirms nor denies that Mary married.

What is clear is that the Quran’s emphasis remains on her faith and God’s miraculous plan rather than on later historical details.

Mary and Jesus

The Quran consistently presents Mary and Jesus together.

Mary never becomes the object of worship.

Nor does the Quran present Jesus as divine.

Instead, both are portrayed as devoted servants of God and signs for humanity.

Their story continually directs attention back to God’s power, mercy, and guidance.
