Rashad Khalifa and the Quran
INTRODUCTION
Rashad Khalifa is most widely known for his discovery of the Quran’s mathematical structure based on the number 19 and for his identification as God’s Messenger of the Covenant.
His contribution, however, extended considerably beyond the mathematical discovery.
Over a period of years, Rashad brought attention to numerous aspects of the Quran that challenged inherited religious assumptions and opened subjects for renewed examination. These included the purpose of human existence, the Quran as the sole source of religious law, the religion and religious duties of Abraham, the preservation and transmission of the Quran, the death of Jesus, the account of Abraham and his son, the Hereafter, and information concerning future events.
The common principle underlying these subjects was that the evidence should ultimately be found within the Quran itself.
This page provides an overview of Rashad Khalifa’s contribution and a pathway for examining the Quranic evidence associated with it.
The purpose is not to establish Rashad Khalifa as an additional source of religious authority.
The Quran remains the criterion.
THE MESSENGER OF THE COVENANT
The Quran identifies Muhammad as the final prophet:
“Muhammad was not the father of any man among you. He was a messenger of God and the final prophet.”
(Quran 33:40)
Quran 3:81 describes a covenant taken from the prophets concerning a messenger who comes after scripture and wisdom have been given:
“And God took a covenant from the prophets: ‘I will give you the scripture and wisdom. Afterwards, a messenger will come to confirm what is with you. You shall believe in him and support him.’”
Rashad Khalifa identified himself as this Messenger of the Covenant.
His claim does not rest merely upon his having made it. It must be evaluated against the Quranic framework: the distinction between prophet and messenger, the covenant of 3:81, the messenger’s function of confirming existing scripture, and the evidence associated with his mission.
The Quranic case for a messenger after the prophets and the evidence associated with Rashad Khalifa are examined separately on IslamUnraveled.
A BROADER CONTRIBUTION TO UNDERSTANDING THE QURAN
Rashad Khalifa is frequently associated almost exclusively with Code 19. His own presentation of his mission, however, described a considerably broader contribution.
Appendix 2 identifies a number of subjects that Rashad maintained were brought to light as part of that mission. They include:
- The Quran’s mathematical composition
- The identification of Quran 9:128–129 as later additions
- The purpose of human existence
- One religion for all people
- Zakat and its proper observance
- Information concerning the end of the world
- The destiny of those who die before the age of forty
- The Quranic account of Jesus’ death
- How the Quran was delivered to and through Muhammad
- Evidence that Muhammad wrote the Quranic revelations
- Why belief in God does not by itself guarantee salvation
- The Quranic account of Abraham and his son
- The relationship between submission to God and happiness
- Quranic principles concerning criminal justice
These subjects vary greatly in their nature and significance. Some concern fundamental religious principles; others concern information or conclusions brought to light through examination of particular Quranic passages.
They have one important feature in common:
They should not be accepted merely because Rashad Khalifa stated them. Their basis must be examined in the Quran.
The sections that follow introduce some of the most significant of these contributions.
THE PROOF WITHIN THE QURAN
THE MATHEMATICAL STRUCTURE BASED ON 19
One of Rashad Khalifa’s most consequential contributions was his discovery of an intricate mathematical structure within the Quran based upon the number 19.
The Quran itself draws attention to this number:
“Over it is nineteen.”
(Quran 74:30)
The following verse assigns several functions to the number, including strengthening certainty, removing doubt, and testing the responses of different people.
Rashad presented the mathematical composition not as a human construction imposed upon the Quran, but as evidence already embedded within the Quran and brought to light at the appointed time.
This distinction is fundamental:
The messenger did not create the proof. The proof is contained within the Quran.
The existing IslamUnraveled studies examine this relationship between the messenger and the proof in detail.

QURAN 9:128–129
The mathematical structure also became central to Rashad Khalifa’s conclusion that Quran 9:128–129 were not part of the Quran as originally revealed.
This was an extraordinary claim because it concerned the integrity of the Quranic text itself.
Rashad maintained that the mathematical structure provided physical evidence exposing these two verses as later additions and simultaneously demonstrating God’s preservation of the Quran.
The evidence should therefore be examined rather than the conclusion accepted solely on Rashad’s authority.

FOUNDATIONAL QURANIC PRINCIPLES
WORSHIP GOD ALONE
The mathematical discovery cannot be separated from the central religious message Rashad Khalifa advocated:
Worship God alone.
Belief that God exists is not necessarily the same as worshiping Him alone. The Quran repeatedly describes people who believe in God while simultaneously associating other persons, authorities or intermediaries with Him.
This makes idolatry much broader than the worship of physical statues.
The fundamental issue is whether worship, religious devotion, trust and religious authority are dedicated absolutely to God.
Rashad therefore called people beyond religious labels and inherited affiliations to the Quran’s fundamental command:
You shall worship God alone.

THE QURAN ALONE
Worship of God alone necessarily raises another question:
Who has the authority to establish religion?
The Quran states:
“Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed?”
(Quran 6:114)
Rashad Khalifa challenged the accumulated traditions and religious authorities that had become additional sources of religious law alongside the Quran.
The issue goes beyond whether a particular hadith or tradition is historically authentic.
The more fundamental question is:
Has God authorized any source besides His revelation to establish religious law?
Rashad’s work redirected religious authority to the Quran itself.

ONE RELIGION FOR ALL PEOPLE
Rashad Khalifa did not call for the establishment of another denomination or sect.
He emphasized that God’s religion is fundamentally one religion for all people: submission to God alone.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam developed distinct religious identities over time, accompanied by doctrines, traditions and religious laws attributed to their respective authorities.
The Quran instead repeatedly directs people back to Abraham and describes him as neither Jewish nor Christian, but as a monotheistic submitter to God.
The task therefore is not to decide which inherited religious institution should prevail over the others. It is to distinguish God’s revelation from the human religious structures that accumulated around it.
Appendix 2 associates this aspect of Rashad’s mission particularly with Appendices 13, 15 and 19.

WHY ARE WE HERE?
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE
Among the most important subjects Rashad Khalifa brought to attention was the Quranic explanation of why human beings exist and why we are here.
Within the framework he presented from the Quran, human existence did not begin with our physical birth on earth.
The Quran provides a larger setting involving Satan’s rebellion, human choice, life on earth, and an opportunity for redemption through recognition and worship of God alone.
Earthly life therefore becomes a temporary test rather than an end in itself.
Our possessions, relationships, successes, failures and difficulties acquire a different perspective when considered against the purpose for which we exist.
The fundamental question becomes:
Will we recognize God alone as our Lord and willingly submit to Him?
Appendix 2 identifies explaining the purpose of our lives as one of Rashad Khalifa’s contributions and directs readers to Appendix 7.

RELIGIOUS PRACTICES
THE RELIGION AND DUTIES OF ABRAHAM
Rashad Khalifa also emphasized an important distinction concerning religious duties.
The Quran presents submission to God as the religion of Abraham and commands Muhammad and the believers to follow Abraham’s religion. The fundamental religious practices were therefore not first invented or introduced by Muhammad when the Quran was revealed.
Muhammad grew up among people who already practiced forms of prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage. He learned inherited religious practices through his family, elders and society. As the Quran was revealed, however, it confirmed what remained correct and corrected inherited distortions.
A similar principle helps explain Rashad Khalifa’s own development concerning religious practices.
Rashad did not begin by reconstructing every religious duty independently from the Quran. Like other Muslims, he learned inherited religious practices from his family, elders and surrounding society. As his study of the Quran developed over time, inherited practices could be examined against the Quran, retaining what was confirmed and correcting what the Quran showed had been altered.
There is therefore an important distinction between:
How a religious practice is transmitted
and
What gives that practice religious authority.
Muhammad learned inherited practices within his society and was corrected as Quranic verses were revealed. Rashad Khalifa likewise inherited religious practices from his society and corrected his understanding over time as their Quranic basis became evident.
The Quran remains the criterion.
IslamUnraveled presently organizes these subjects separately under Abraham and Religious Duties.

ZAKAT
Zakat provides a specific example.
Appendix 2 identifies Rashad’s proclamation of the importance of Zakat for redemption and his explanation of its proper observance as part of his contribution.
Quran 7:156 connects God’s mercy with righteousness and the giving of Zakat.
Rashad examined how this inherited obligation was to be observed, including when it becomes due and how it is calculated and distributed.
As with the other religious duties, the inherited existence of Zakat does not make every later traditional rule concerning it authoritative. Its religious basis and proper observance must be examined against the Quran.

INFORMATION BROUGHT TO LIGHT FROM WITHIN THE QURAN
Rashad Khalifa’s contribution was not limited to broad theological principles.
He also brought attention to specific information that he maintained was already present within the Quran but whose significance had been overlooked, misunderstood, or obscured by inherited interpretations.
This illustrates an important distinction concerning a messenger who comes after the completion of scripture.
Quran 3:81 describes the messenger as one who confirms what already exists. Such a messenger does not need to bring another scripture or another body of religious law.
Information can already be embedded within God’s revelation and later be brought to light.
The mathematical structure is the most prominent example, but Rashad applied this principle to numerous other subjects.
JESUS' DEATH
The death and crucifixion of Jesus represent a major point of disagreement between Christianity and traditional Islam. Christianity generally teaches that Jesus was crucified and died on the cross, while traditional Muslim belief holds that Jesus was not crucified or killed but was raised alive.
Rashad Khalifa presented a different explanation based on his reading of both the Quran and the Biblical accounts.
He concluded that Jesus’s soul was raised to God before his arrest and crucifixion of the empty body. The body subsequently arrested, tortured, and crucified was therefore an empty body – Jesus himself had already departed to the world of souls.
Rashad based this conclusion principally on Quran 3:55, where God tells Jesus that He will put him to death and raise him to Himself, together with Quran 4:157, which states that Jesus’ enemies neither killed nor crucified him but were led to believe that they had. Appendix 22 also points to Biblical accounts in which the arrested Jesus does not respond to accusations and questioning as supporting evidence for this understanding.
His conclusion therefore differs from both the conventional Christian and traditional Muslim accounts: the body was crucified, but Jesus – the living soul – had already departed before the crucifixion.

THE QURAN'S DELIVERY THROUGH MUHAMMAD
Rashad also examined how the Quran was delivered to Muhammad and subsequently transmitted.
Appendix 2 specifically identifies two related conclusions:
- explaining the Quran’s delivery to and through Muhammad; and
- announcing that Muhammad himself wrote God’s revelations.
These conclusions challenge the traditional portrayal of Muhammad as an illiterate man unable to read or write and invite examination of the Quranic evidence concerning revelation, recording and transmission.

ABRAHAM WAS NOT ORDERED TO KILL HIS SON
The familiar story that God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son is deeply embedded in Jewish, Christian and Muslim tradition.
Rashad Khalifa maintained that the Quran does not say God issued such a command.
Instead, the Quran describes Abraham seeing himself sacrificing his son in a dream. The distinction changes the meaning of the episode and raises the question of whether a traditional narrative has been read into the Quran rather than derived from it.

OTHER INFORMATION IDENTIFIED FROM THE QURAN
Appendix 2 identifies additional subjects Rashad Khalifa maintained were brought to light through his mission, including:
- information concerning the end of the world – Appendix 25
- the destiny of those who die before the age of forty – Appendix 32
- why many people who believe in God nevertheless fail to attain salvation – Appendix 27
These are substantial conclusions and should be examined through their Quranic evidence rather than treated as authoritative simply because Rashad Khalifa announced them.
Explore – Appendix 2 – The Messenger of the Covenant for the broader list of contributions associated with his mission.
BELIEF IN GOD IS NOT ENOUGH
One of the most consequential subjects identified in Appendix 2 concerns why many people who believe in God do not make it to Heaven.
The Quran repeatedly describes people who acknowledge God while also committing shirk – associating others with Him.
The issue is therefore not merely:
Do I believe in God?
It is:
Do I worship God alone?
Religious figures, prophets, messengers, saints, institutions, traditions and other authorities can become objects of religious association when they are given authority or devotion that belongs to God alone.
This principle applies equally to followers of Rashad Khalifa.
Accepting Rashad as a messenger while turning Rashad himself into another religious authority would contradict the central message he brought.

SUBMISSION TO GOD AND HAPPINESS
Appendix 2 also identifies Rashad Khalifa’s proclamation of the secret of perfect happiness as part of his contribution.
Within the Quranic framework, lasting happiness is not ultimately dependent upon wealth, status, circumstances, or the absence of difficulty.
It comes from submission to God, trust in Him, and recognition that our lives and everything we possess belong to Him.
This connects the purpose of life with everyday existence.
Submission is therefore not merely a religious label. It changes how a person understands success, loss, anxiety, possessions and the future.

THE QURAN AND SOCIETY
Rashad Khalifa also applied Quranic principles beyond individual worship and theology.
Appendix 2 includes the establishment of a criminal justice system among the contributions associated with his mission.
This illustrates a broader principle: if God alone possesses religious authority, questions concerning justice and social order should likewise be examined through the principles God establishes rather than simply through inherited religious jurisprudence.
This subject is treated separately in Rashad’s Appendix 37.
THE QURAN TRANSLATION AND APPENDICES
Rashad Khalifa produced an English translation of the Quran accompanied by extensive appendices addressing subjects he considered important to understanding its message.
These appendices became an important part of his contribution because they brought together the Quranic evidence he presented for many of the subjects summarized on this page.
They include discussions of:
- the mathematical miracle
- the Messenger of the Covenant
- the purpose of life
- Abraham
- religious duties
- Jesus
- Muhammad and transmission of the Quran
- death and the Hereafter
- religious authority
- Quranic law and society
The translation and appendices, however, should lead the reader toward the Quran rather than become substitutes for it.
As with any human presentation, the claims can be examined against God’s revelation.

THE MESSENGER IS NOT THE SOURCE OF RELIGIOUS LAW
This distinction becomes particularly important after considering the many things Rashad Khalifa discovered, explained or proclaimed.
Recognizing someone as God’s messenger does not turn that person’s every statement into religious law.
The Quran commands obedience to God’s messengers because they deliver God’s message. It does not authorize believers to transform every statement, opinion, explanation or action of a human messenger into an additional body of religion.
The same principle that applies to Muhammad must therefore apply to Rashad Khalifa.
Rashad’s statements should not become a new body of tradition alongside the Quran.
Nor should accepting his messengership require accepting every conclusion he expressed during his lifetime merely because Rashad said it.
The Quran states:
“Then it is upon Us to explain it.”
(Quran 75:19)
God explains His revelation.
A messenger delivers, confirms, warns and brings God’s evidence to people’s attention. The Quran remains above the human messenger.
The proper relationship remains:
God → His revelation → the messenger who delivers or confirms it
It should never become:
God → messenger → messenger’s personal words as additional religious law
Otherwise, replacing traditional religious authorities with a new human authority would simply repeat the very problem that the Quran-alone message seeks to correct.

EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE
Rashad Khalifa made an extraordinary claim and presented evidence that he maintained authenticated both the Quran and his mission.
The appropriate response is neither automatic acceptance nor automatic rejection.
The Quran places responsibility upon each individual:
“You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them.”
(Quran 17:36 – Rashad Khalifa translation)
The appropriate starting point is therefore the Quran itself.

CONCLUSION
Rashad Khalifa’s significance should not ultimately be determined by biography, reputation, acceptance, rejection, or personal attachment.
The central issue is the Quran.
Did the Quran anticipate a messenger after the prophets?
Is the mathematical proof genuinely embedded within it?
Does the Quran establish itself as the complete source of religious law?
Does it support the explanation of the purpose of human existence presented by Rashad?
Do the Quranic passages concerning Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad, religious duties, salvation and other subjects support the conclusions he brought forward?
These are questions that can be investigated.
Rashad Khalifa’s contribution was considerably broader than the discovery of a mathematical structure. His work directed attention toward information and evidence within the Quran and, above all, toward its fundamental message:
Worship God alone.
Ultimately, the Quran – not Rashad Khalifa, IslamUnraveled, religious tradition, or any other human source – must remain the criterion.
